A Day in the Life of an OFTP Student

A Typical Monday During the Summer...
 
8:00 - OFTP students, crew members and staff gather in the Workhouse to check-in and see what work is in order for the day
 
8:15 - Students break into separate harvest teams to harvest items for the summer CSA share, including greens, lettuce, salad mix, carrots, herbs, etc.;  staff members are available to each student for guidance and instruction on harvesting each crop
 
10:00 - Students in charge of managing the summer CSA for the week operate the wash/pack facility and pack boxes for distribution; all other students break into separate harvest teams to harvest summer fruits such as tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, cucumbers and other summer fruits that require regular harvest
 
11:30 - Students and staff prepare and share a delicious farm salad together during lunch
 
12:30 - OFTP students set off, notebooks in hand, with lead instructor Jeremy for a 2.5 hour farm walk, a weekly walking-lecture during which they survey all crops (and their pests, diseases, and fertility) in the fields and greenhouses
 
3:00 - Students meet with their field and house co-managers to prioritize what work needs to be done in their spaces that week; a comprehensive worklist is made by the group, as is a harvest list for the Farm Stand and CSA for Thursday
 
3:30 - Students are dismissed; a group of students stays after to disucuss their plans for seeding an experimental grain plot in the space availabe for their personal creative use!
 
4:00 - Students in charge of the summer CSA stay to set-up distrubtion and interact with CSA members as they come to pick up their shares!
 
7:00 - Some students gather for an impromptu pot-luck dinner, followed by a viewing of "King Corn" (after getting all of their reading done, of course!)
