How do I schedule an SOF tour?
We love that so many people are interested in learning more about the Student Organic Farm and what we do here. Please note, however, that as a fully operational educational farm, with lots of food to grow, new farmers to teach, and people to feed, it may take up to 3 weeks to schedule and confirm a tour date. Plan ahead to assure that your preferred date is available.
Everyone is welcome to request a guided tour by e-mailing the farm at email@example.com. In your initial correspondence please suggest 2-3 date and time options along with the number of people you expect to be in your group.
When are tours available?
Tours are generally available Monday-Friday 8am-5pm. Unfortunately, due to limited staff capacity, weekend tours are not currently offered. All tour scheduling is subject to SOF staff and programmatic availability.
How much does a tour cost and how many people can be in a tour group?
Over the years, we’ve found that more than 30 people in a tour group have difficulty all hearing guides and fitting comfortably in the hoop houses together. Thus, in order to provide visitors with the highest quality tour service, we currently only accommodate tour groups of 30 people or less at the rate of $50/hour. If your group is larger than 30 people, we can, for example, provide 2 tour guides at the same time for a fee of $100.
What do tours cover?
Tours generally cover a brief history of the SOF and its markets, an overview of basic organic farming principles and practices, as well as four-season hoop house vegetable production. If folks are interested in focusing on a particular topic, like CSA or permaculture or winter growing, we are happy to accommodate such interest as much as possible.
Are there any public tours available?
Yes! Our Community Tour dates this year are Saturday, June 15 (great Father's Day activity!), Saturday, July 20 and Saturday, August 17. Tours begin at 10:30 am and last for one hour. These tours are free and open to the public. To reserve your spot in our tour, please RSVP at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Where are you located?
The Student Organic Farm is located on 15 acres at the western edge of the MSU Horticulture Teaching and Research Center (HTRC). Our address is 3291 College Rd. Holt, MI 48842. Please park in the main HTRC parking lot, just inside the main gate when you drive in. A staff member will meet you in the parking lot to walk you out to the SOF at your scheduled tour appointment time. Click here for directions and a map to the farm.
